Owen County abounds with opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Whether it is boating, hunting, fishing, wildlife watching and hiking or enjoy them all. For water adventures, there are the 31 miles of the Kentucky River, plus Severn & Eagle Creeks and Elmer Davis Lake. For land adventures, the 7000+ acres of Wildlife Management Areas are open to all who would enjoy time spent in the quiet of open forests.

Elmer Davis Lake

149 acres was built by Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Resources in 1958. Fishing (quality bluegill fishery, largemouth bass, sunfish, black crappie, white crappie, black bullhead channel catfish).  Great lake for kayaking or canoeing.  Quiet, because motor size is limited. The dock, fish pier & ramp make for easy access.

Kentucky River Access Points

Thirty-one miles of the KY River flow on the western border of Owen County.  The access points are 2 Fish & Wildlife ramps, one in Gratz (it has a dock) and at Perry Park on Big Twin Creek, 1/4 mile from Kentucky River.  These give access for fishing and pleasure boats along with paddling with kayaks & canoes. There are 2 locks located in Owen County, lock #2 at Lockport and #3 at Monterey. Gratz ramp is located on Harlan St in Gratz.


Elk Creek Hunt Club

Elk Creek Hunt Club is unmatched in its world-class sporting clays facilities. Elk Creek throws over 2 million sporting clays per year placing us among the top ranked clubs in the nation. Three separate courses, one over water, offer 45 newly remodeled and paved sporting clays stations on 35 shooting fields which can be shot as 50 or 100 target rounds. Elk Creek’s sporting clays courses are spread over 2,500 acre hunting preserve which also supports the best of upland field and woodland hunting. A fleet of golf carts is available for daily rental and adds comfort to the sporting clay experience.

Eagle Creek Access

Eagle Creek offers a chance to enjoy a day fishing or paddling as Eagle Creek meanders through the countryside.  There’s a ramp for kayaks & canoes and area for fishing.

Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Management Areas

7000+ acres of rolling hills covered by hardwood forests, awaits exploration. The Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources has secured these lands for the preservation of wildlife and to be enjoyed by visitors.  This is a chance to explore forests like Daniel Boone found when he first arrived in Kentucky 250 years ago, these wide-open spaces are waiting for everyone to have a great adventure. To find information on parking, hiking trails (unmarked), fishing, horseback riding and shooting range.


Severn Creek

Severn Creek runs into the Kentucky River near Gratz.  The creek can be accessed from the Kentucky River, from Perry Park boat ramp.  It’s a beautiful spot for paddling & fishing. Severn Creek Rd is a great location for driving country roads to view wildflowers and wildlife.  It’s a rough county road, you may want to turn around at creek crossing.
